In this blog, we invite you to share your thoughts and experiences in the practical use of OER. In particular, we will publish here what we learn from the participants in our OER workshops.

1st Hands-on workshop on use of OER for Skill Development

Progia conducted India’s 1st ever one day Hands-on workshop for creating skill development courses using Open Educational Resources (OER). This workshop was held in partnership with NIESBUD (National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development) which is a govt. entity under Ministry of MSME.

It was a full house with participants from all parts of the country.

The participants were not only excited to learn about OER but were equally eager to know how to create courses using OER. They learnt about various tools & technology by which they can Reuse, Readapt and Remodify the digital content and use it for creating their courses.smiley

Participants liked that through OER they can use world’s best content for their courses and their course content remains updated throughout. With the adoption of OER they can get recognition and build their network globally. This will provide them a great opportunity to expand their market.

Participants created their own class lesson in which they used a video, a document and references to a website. They made sure that the work they are using is from OER and they took care of the CC licenses associated with it.

Participants in general were unaware of CC licenses and the legal issues of sharing their content with others. With this workshop they are now confident to use OER and contribute back to the movement. This was the high point in the workshop when they all discussed about the licenses and agreed that CC-BY and CC-BY-SA are the most suitable licenses for creating courses and adding a commercial angle to it. With some pedagogical approach there were many examples shared during the workshop how one can make OER a sustainable model.smileysmiley

Participants realized that they can now create new courses in lesser time and at lower cost. This will help them to increase their revenue and create a branding for their institute. It was interesting for us to note that participants for whom content generation was a big problem was solved with this workshop and they would now be using OER heavily at their institute.

All in all, I feel that the main aim with which we conducted this workshop was fulfilled. The primary objective was to make the participants familiar with the tools so that they can start using OER themselves.Participants of course didn’t become experts after this workshop but they got started.

Seeing this excellent response we are planning to organize our next workshop on 11th December 2014.
