A Team is a small group of people who are working together to achieve a common purpose. The Team solves problems and makes decisions jointly. Team Members achieve their goal because of their complimentary skills, shared approach, common purpose and holding themselves mutually accountable.

Most work in businesses today actually happens in teams. Effective teamwork is valuable for both the business and the employees.

Here is a brief summary of the course:

  • Team has objectives/goals: this is why it exists in the first place
  • There are many types of teams: task force, work team or functional team, management team, etc.
  • Essential tasks of a team: Set team goals, Formulate and take action to achieve goals, Make decisions that support their goals, Measure, report, and evaluate progress, Adjust plans based on achievement of their goals.
  • Team has structure (roles members play): leader, scribe, facilitator, liaison, etc
  • Team has processes: how things get done, decisions are made and communicated
  • Team has culture: values (e.g. commitment, accountability), rituals (e.g. ways it celebrates success, initiates new members etc)
  • Team has stages of development: forming, storming, norming, performing
  • Effective team has: clear and shared goals, motivated and committed members, well defined processes, skill to identify and track tasks and task owners, adequate resources, nurturing environment, management buy-in, ability to continuously monitor and improve itself
  • Effective team member: has the know-how to do assigned tasks with high quality, has the right attitude, is committed to shared goals, participates fully, listens actively, supports team decisions, seeks to understand all angles, remains respectful at all times keeping emotions in control, comes to meeting fully prepared, completes deliverables on-time, is helpful to other team members
  • Skills needed to be an effective team player: communication and presentation, understanding and respect for different personality styles, active listening, creative problem solving and conflict management
